Ex: Superman's secret identity is! (Hover to view spoiler.) Flair Filters. You could always start back at the beginning with series like X-O Manowar, Harbinger, and Bloodshot. Unity is a team book that has most of the major players together. If you want a more humorous tone, there's Archer & Armstrong. If you like humor and debauchery, check out Quantum & Woody. There is also a team-up miniseries for these characters called The Delinquents.
If you want to just dive into where the books are right now, pick up The Valiant (four issue miniseries) and then dive into Bloodshot: Reborn, Ninjak, Divinity, and Ivar Timewalker. Here is a post I made a while back summarizing each Valiant series. Ongoings: Series marked with a star are concluded.
Archer and Armstrong.: A naive assassin teams up with an immortal drunkard to defeat the secret societies secretly controlling the world. Also an evil Jim Morrison. Bloodshot.: An engineered super soldier is given his free will and sets out to get answers from his employers and hopefully uncover some of his past. Bloodshot Reborn: Bloodshot has been changed by the events of The Valiant and is left a broken man.
Harbinger.: A young drug addict with super powers finds himself in conflict with another super being with far more power and influence and far fewer morals. X-O Manowar: A 5th century Visigoth prince finds himself in the present day and the user of an incredibly powerful suit of alien armor. The flagship title of the universe, along with Unity. Shadowman.: Voodoo and dark magic are abound in New Orleans as a young man finds himself bonded to a ancient spirit. Rai: In the year 4001, Japan is a massive floating metropolis sheparded by the AI Father and guarded by the enigmatic Rai, but trouble is brewing after the first murder in a thousand years. Ninjak: Colin King is an assassin/ninja/spy working for MI-6 working a variety of deadly jobs. Unity: A team of several of the most dangerous heroes must protect the world from all manner of threats.
Imperium: The antagonist of Harbinger has decided to drop his charade and he will make his utopian dream a reality, regardless of morality and opposition. The worst monsters in the world are doing their best to make a better tomorrow. This is my personal favorite. Quantum and Woody.: The most dysfunctional pair of brothers ever to exist find themselves stuck together after a lab accident gives them superpowers. Ivar, Timewalker: A scientist who invents time travel is on the run through time with the titular Ivar after he saves her life from evil robots from the future. Eternal Warrior.: The immortal warrior fights against threats in the past and future.
This series seems to be quietly ignored by the rest of the universe. Mini series: Armor Hunters.: An alliance of alien hunters have come to destroy the X-O Manowar armor and the entire world is in their crosshairs. Habinger Wars.: Several factions all converge on Las Vegas in pursuit of escaped super powered children. The Deliquents.: Archer, Armstrong, Quantum, and Woody are on a hunt for the fabled treasure of the Hobos. Divinity: In the Cold War, the Russians sent an astronaut on a risky mission trying to go farther than ever before. The astronaut has returned and he is different. God has arrived on Earth, and he is a communist.
The Death Defying Doctor Mirage.: Doctor Mirage can speak to every spirit of the dead, except one: her husband. But now she learns she might have a chance to find him after all. The Valiant.: The Eternal Warrior is the guardian of the Geomancer, and the Geomancer is the speaker for the Earth.
But the Immortal Enemy might just be a foe that not even the entire world can beat. Eternal Warrior: Days of Steel.: The Eternal Warrior must defend a young child destined to be a hero. Dead Drop: In 30 minutes an alien bio weapon will detonate in the heart of New York. Quantum and Woody Must Die!: You too can mind control the greatest worst superhero pair with this one odd trick!
Shadowman: End Times.: A disturbing revelation means Shadowman's life is coming down around him and there is nothing he can do. The Book of Death: After the events of The Valiant, everyone wants to get their hands on the book of the Geomancer which has the future recorded within. The Death Defying Doctor Mirage: Second Life: A sequel to the first Doctor Mirage series. Upcoming, few details at the moment. Pretty sure that is everything. I can give you more detailed explanations of you want. I recommend starting with XO, Harbinger, or Archer and Armstrong.
I would recommend staring with any of the following: X-O Manowar, Harbinger, Archer & Armstrong, and/or Bloodshot. Those were the first four titles and would give the best foundation of the universe to build on for anything after that.
Out of those four, X-O is still ongoing (up to #35 currently), while the others went up to #25 before they were done telling the story they wanted to tell and stopped. I'd vote for Harbinger as the best written of any of Valiant's books, but none of those 4 listed are bad at all. I guess part of the question depends on what you like. Want funny?
Get Archer & Armstrong. Want sci-fi? Get X-O Manowar. Want super powered teens fighting the system?. Want guns blazing action?
Get Bloodshot. (I wouldn't recommend starting Bloodshot:Reborn without reading through the original Bloodshot 1-25 and then The Valiant 1-4.).
Author: Chris Bishop ISBN: 516 Genre: Literary Criticism File Size: 73. 83 MB Format: PDF, ePub, Mobi Download: 124 Read: 1236 The comic book has become an essential icon of the American Century, an era defined by optimism in the face of change and by recognition of the intrinsic value of democracy and modernization.
For many, the Middle Ages stand as an antithesis to these ideals, and yet medievalist comics have emerged and endured, even thrived alongside their superhero counterparts. Chris Bishop presents a reception history of medievalist comics, setting them against a greater backdrop of modern American history. From its genesis in the 1930s to the present, Bishop surveys the medievalist comic, its stories, characters, settings, and themes drawn from the European Middle Ages. Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant emerged from an America at odds with monarchy, but still in love with King Arthur. Green Arrow remains the continuation of a long fascination with Robin Hood that has become as central to the American identity as it was to the British. The Mighty Thor reflects the legacy of Germanic migration into the United States. The rugged individualism of Conan the Barbarian owes more to the western cowboy than it does to the continental knight-errant.
In the narrative of Red Sonja, we can trace a parallel history of feminism. Bishop regards these comics as not merely happenchance, but each success (Prince Valiant and The Mighty Thor) or failure (Beowulf: Dragon Slayer) as a result and an indicator of certain American preoccupations amid a larger cultural context. Intrinsically modernist paragons of pop-culture ephemera, American comics have ironically continued to engage with the European Middle Ages. Bishop illuminates some of the ways in which we use an imagined past to navigate the present and plots some possible futures as we valiantly shape a new century. Author: Brian M.
Kane ISBN: 057 Genre: Humor File Size: 52. 6 MB Format: PDF, ePub Download: 315 Read: 848 The ultimate book for Prince Valiant fans and collectors. Out of print for over a decade, The Prince Valiant Companion has become a Holy Grail for collectors of the series. Now, in anticipation of the seventy-fifth anniversary of comics’ longest-running adventure strip, and to celebrate their own just-launched reprinting of the strip’s classic earliest years, Fantagraphics is proud to present an expanded version of this hard-to-find collector’s item.
Compiled by award-winning Foster biographer Brian M. Kane, The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion beautifully and definitively showcases the careers of artists Hal Foster, John Cullen Murphy, and Gary Gianni. In addition to updating the original version’s story synopsis section with over thirty years of material, The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion also contains rare and new articles. Included in this volume is a never before reprinted newspaper feature from 1949, Foster’s final interview conducted by Arn Saba, an extensive interview with John Cullen Murphy, and a new interview with the current Prince Valiant creative team of Gary Gianni and Mark Schultz.
The Companion also contains a new, in-depth article by Kane on Foster’s artistic influences, as well as a foreword by comics historian Brian Walker, and an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ray Bradbury. A special feature of The Companion is a sixteen-page color section of carefully selected strips from the entire run of the comic.
Showcasing this section are eight pages by Foster, scanned and digitally restored from original color engraver’s proofs that had been carefully stored and preserved for over forty years. For the first time ever, collectors will be able to see Prince Valiant as Foster intended it to be seen, with all of his fine inked line work intact.
Rounding out this section are four John Cullen Murphy pages from the Murphy family’s collection of proofs, and four Gary Gianni pages that were selected by the artist and digitally recolored under his supervision.
